It is easy to associate youth with inexperience. But when it comes to the youth orchestra named after Gustav Mahler, founded by Claudio Abbado himself, such a notion must be instantly dismissed. Since its inception in the late 20th century, this orchestra has produced many of today’s leading musicians of the world’s top ensembles, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, as well as the Czech Philharmonic.
Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Bruckner’s monumental Ninth Symphony belong to the demanding symphonic repertoire that admits no beginners. Enthusiasm alone is not enough without perfectly mastered instruments and the ability to function as part of a large ensemble. The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is a master key to the world of great symphonic music, and as the first of its kind in the West, it opened its doors to members from the former communist countries. A host of world-renowned conductors has shaped this ensemble into a top-class specialist, particularly in the great symphonic repertoire of German Romanticism – and with Manfred Honeck this is even more true.
The Violin Concerto has become the most frequently performed concert work of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who fled Vienna to escape the Nazis and went on to establish a reputation as one of the founding fathers of Hollywood’s classic film music. Anton Bruckner’s colossal symphony, once mocked and misunderstood, today ranks among the highlights of the concert seasons of the world’s finest orchestras.
